“Freedom Convoy” of truckers expected next month in U.S.
President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau held a discussion on trucker convoy protests and agreed to coordinate on shutting down the destabilizing demonstrations.
The prime minister said he and the president spoke about the American and global influences behind a movement that has blocked key border crossings and occupied downtown Ottawa for weeks. Mr. Trudeau said he also spoke with the president about the forced closure of three ports of entry, including the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. That bridge reopened Sunday.
The two heads of state discussed how the Canadian demonstrations are linked to global frustration with the pandemic itself, COVID-19 restrictions, and the governments that impose public health measures.
As the Canadian government struggles to contain the “freedom convoy,” those in the U.S. are anticipating an American version of the movement, known as the “People’s Convoy” which plans to depart the first week of March from California and make its way to Washington, D.C.
Around the world, convoys sympathetic to the Canadian truckers have formed with varying degrees of success.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is planning to update its indoor mask mandating guidelines as early as next week, possibly easing its recommendations as many states loosen their mask mandates and COVID-19 case counts decline nationwide.
